At Open Heart, “love your neighbor” isn’t lip service.
We take seriously the words of Isaiah 58:
"If you get rid of unfair practices,
quit blaming victims,
quit gossiping about other people’s sins,
If you are generous with the hungry
and start giving yourselves to the down-and-out,
Your lives will begin to glow in the darkness,
your shadowed lives will be bathed in sunlight.
I will always show you where to go.
I’ll give you a full life in the emptiest of places—
firm muscles, strong bones.
You’ll be like a well-watered garden,
a gurgling spring that never runs dry.
You’ll use the old rubble of past lives to build anew,
rebuild the foundations from out of your past.
You’ll be known as those who can fix anything,
restore old ruins, rebuild and renovate,
make the community livable again." (Isaiah 58: 9-12 (MSG)

Welcome from Open Heart's Pastor
Welcome to Open Heart United Methodist Church. Located in the heart of Robbinsdale in Rapid City, we are a growing and diverse congregation of people who love Jesus, and we want to make the world better because of it. I grew up in Rapid City, attended Rapid City Central, and graduated from St. Olaf College in Minnesota. Having grown up largely "unchurched" and working in public policy and governmental affairs, my call to ministry came a bit later in life, when I was pregnant with my fourth child! But when God calls you, you can't ignore it. My husband (Eric) and I have four kids, and several pets. Our house is rarely quiet, the laundry is never done, but I wouldn't trade my life for the world!
I have a passion for sharing the love of Jesus with those on the fringes, and a heart for social justice. I believe that Jesus is the great uniter, and that there is no greater power in this universe than the healing love of God.
Open Heart is a laid back and authentic faith community, serving our neighbors in love. No matter your story, no matter your background, your successes or your failings, we have a place for you here. I hope you'll join us for worship soon. Come! You are invited! - Pastor Holly
For nearly 60 years, Open Heart (formerly South Maple United Methodist Church) has impacted thousands of members in the Rapid City community and beyond. Whether it be serving meals at the Cornerstone Rescue Mission, to clothing people through our free clothing store, to working on international mission projects through the United Methodist Committee on Relief, to teaching youth to grow in their faith through our after-school program, Open Heart is here to serve as Christ calls us to serve--with non-judgment and open-hearted compassion.
Baptisms & Professions of Faith Since July 2017
While United Methodists traditionally practice infant baptism as a means to usher in God's love and grace, we baptize any person who has not previously been baptized, and who wants to dedicate his/her life to sharing the love of Jesus.
Years Serving South rapid City & Beyond
Founded in 1959 as South Maple Methodist Church, the church has stood as a community pillar in South Rapid City, serving our neighbors locally through missions, and providing support and resources for disasters that affect communities throughout the United States and abroad.
Local children & Families Impacted per year
Through iniatives like our Tuesday Afterschool Program for middle school youth, Waffle Church, Clothe-a-Kid and, our Christmas Miracle Offering and other community projects, Open Heart impacted over 100 families in 2018 by showing Jesus' love through food, mentoring, charitable giving, and spiritual support.
Little Free Pantry
Our Little Free Pantry--installed on our church lawn in April 2018, is a source of non-perishable food items and other necessities for those in need. You can take what you need or leave donations in the box! You may also drop off donations in our church office Monday through Thursdays from 8:30am-12:00pm. Items needed especially in the summer are non-perishable food items that do well in the heat, sunscreen, toiletries, and even bottles of water!
From joining or starting a small group study, to volunteering for our youth programs, to serving waffles at Waffle Church, to singing or reading to the elderly, there are many ways you can get involved, build relationships, form community, and love like Jesus!
